Song Review: "prichitat | stabat filius" - Behind Closed Doors
Brutally Progressive Instrumental Shreddage.

With members from the Netherlands, Germany, and Sweden, the 3-piece instrumental act Behind Closed Doors is a versatile act that just released their newest single "prichitat | stabat filius". The song immediately establishes heavy progressive metal influences as bouncy djent-style guitar and bass riffs are complemented by explosive drums and soaring string melodies. Despite lacking vocals, Behind Closed Doors does an excellent job of keeping things fresh and interesting–creating deeply complex soundscapes with intricate layering of many instrumental tracks. Emphasized orchestral elements add melody to the onslaught of chunky instrumental riffs, but at times the strings create a slightly dissonant clashing with the instrumentals, reminding us of the intentional dissonance of genres like Thall that aim to create haunting and off-putting atmospheres.
Clocking in at just over 5 minutes, "prichitat | stabat filius" takes listeners on a relentlessly progressive musical journey while rapid instrumental runs create an intensely technical sound. Just after the 4-minute mark, Behind Closed Doors fades out guitar, bass, and drums, leaving the emphasized strings to stand alone. Over the next minute, the orchestra slowly decays as darkly ambient and eerie melodies form a disturbing yet calm soundscape to end the song on a gentle note.
Fans of Thall, djent/progressive metal, and instrumental genres like math rock, are certain to enjoy Behind Closed Doors' distinct flavor of influences that builds upon the sounds of progressive and heavy metal genres. You can stream prichitat | stabat filius" out everywhere now!
