Deathrow Bodeen Release New EP "LOST" | The Metalverse.net

Texas metal act Deathrow Bodeen has just released their new 5-track EP "LOST". The band confronts isolation, grief, and the search for meaning across the songs. The emotional track, "Betty" explores the loss of someone you love, while the title track "Lost" reflects on the search for direction when the path forward is filled with uncertainty.

“'Lost'"is about the places we end up when life takes us somewhere we never expected to go. These songs deal with different kinds of loss, struggle, and the things we carry with us. We wanted to make something heavy, but we also wanted people to feel something when they listen.” - Michael Lynn Boring II

The first track starts with a distant lofi effect before bursting into action with full intensity as a bending guitar riff gives me Gojira vibes. The band instantly builds a sound that feels like classic death metal before jumping into a chorus that feels more metalcore-adjacent, as djenty riffage and melodic guitar build behind heavy screaming vocals. At the halfway point, the band throws the listener into the midst of a brutally heavy breakdown as growling, drop-tuned guitar chugs, and slamming drums create an explosive sound.

Next is "Betty" which slows things down and builds a much more atmospheric sound as clean, reverbed guitar and thumping bass lines are met by 2000s metalcore-esque vocals. The second track almost gives me an Incubus vibe, which is a wildly different sound from the first track. I actually really enjoy this switch-up, and it creates an interesting sense of dynamics between tracks. Don't count the heavy side of Deathrow Bodeen out, though; the track still picks up later, throwing growls, crushing guitar, and extreme metal intensity back into the sound before a final chorus.

Wasting no time, "Vines" brings back the death metal sound from the first track as guttural screams and heavy-hitting guitar riffs are matched by impactful drumwork. Distorted spoken vocals create another layer of vocal style while keeping things brutal.

If "Vines" was death metal, "Lost" reminds me more of black metal as rapid blast beats and haunting screams fill the atmosphere. A consistent bending riff keeps things heavy. Soon, "Lost" strays from the black metal sound as eccentric belted clean vocals add some melody to the mix. At the halfway point, a bridge is introduced with clean guitar, distorted singing, and jazz-esque drumming–building a prog-type sound that mixes things up. Soon, a calm guitar solo is introduced, soaring through the mix with an ambient quality to it. The song launches back into full intensity to close out.

The final track, "Magic Bullet" starts with a dark guitar riff as grooving drums and explosive growls create a hard-hitting sound. Deathrow Bodeen creates a unique mix of classic heavy metal and old-school death metal to create a wildly heavy and energetic feel to the song. A clean bridge splits up the song, bringing an 80s rock 'n' roll vibe to the song, which is pretty unique, before catapulting back into extreme metal.

Overall, "Lost" is a heavy record that shows no fear of experimentation, which I always enjoy in music. I think "Circles" and "Betty" are the strongest tracks on the album and showcase the band's dynamic changes in sound the best.
