Review

JJ Rane was created by founding member Jonathan Matwiv–originally starting as a solo project that drew comparisons to acts like Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson. Eventually, Matwiv enlisted a diverse lineup of musicians to work with him remotely as they recorded remotely during the COVID-19 Pandemic, including musicians: Jon Button on bass (Sheryl Crow, The Who), Nik Hughes on drums (Bush), Mike Smith on drums (Chayce Beckhamm, Trapt, Tantric), and Lea Cappelli on vocals (L'FREAQ).

On February 14th, JJ Rane released their newest EP, "Back into the River". The title track quickly introduces a nostalgic, classic rock sound with elements that remind of acts like Led Zeppelin while also having a funky, folk-esque sound. The mix brings clarity while keeping intentional rawness that gives a classic feel to a modern song. Bright vocal melodies are matched by distant guitar leads and groovy drum patterns to create an all-around melodic and attractive sound.

Next up is "Hell of a Lie" which was mixed by legendary producer Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar, Grady). The song introduces itself with a bright, funk-rock sound, drawing in the listener with an exciting and wildly dynamic musical style from the very first moment. Anthemic choruses bring intense melody and addictive vocal hooks while verses are filled with chunky rock riffs and dramatic vocals. After a soaring guitar solo interlude, "Hell of a Lie" launches into a final chorus before fading out.

The 3rd song "In the Middle of Two Worlds" begins with lofi, distant instrumentals as emphasized vocals are displayed while panning instrumentals create a unique, experimental sound. Soon, full band instrumentation launches into the mix as JJ Rane introduces the song's chorus for the first time. With "In the Middle of Two Worlds" JJ Rane excellently showcases the use of contrast between intentional empty soundscapes in the verses and massive stadium-ready choruses, creating powerful changes in dynamics.

"Wake Up" starts with clean guitar as reverbed electric guitar builds over it and gentle vocals slowly join the fray. JJ Rane showcases a softer, acoustic sound in the start of the track before jumping into a brighter, electrifying sound, once again showing a masterful use of juxtaposition in their music. Multiple vocal harmonies create a choir-like effect and alongside echoing instrumentals create a soft and atmospheric sound that matches the vibe of "Wake Up" excellently. At just over 4 minutes, "Wake Up" is the longest song of the album, yet its difference in musical style keeps things fresh and debuts new influences throughout the album.

"Back into the River II (Alternate Version)" is a fun inclusion into the EP, acting as a deep-cut alternate style of the title track. This version of the track takes on a more clean sound–as opposed to the original version's electric sound–that is a perfect soft and atmospheric ending to the EP. Multitudes of vocal tracks create a powerful group singing effect that showcases an intensely melodic sound.

Fans of classic rock, alternative rock, and folk music will love JJ Rane's mix of a nostalgic sound with modern rock 'n' roll. You can stream "Back Into the River" out everywhere now!
