Review

New electronic artist Modfrey just released their debut album, Why Would You Care, on March 23rd, 2025. The first track of the album Sellout starts off with bright melodic guitar leads and background strumming that leads into building pads and distant lofi singing before bursting into soaring electric guitar, electronic elements and percussive low singing. Modfrey quickly showcases a sound that seems to land somewhere in between electronic music, experimental rock, and lofi/pop influences.

Intentional starts with electronic drum beats and distorted guitar tones, while Modfrey's signature distant lofi vocals fill in the soundscape. Juxtaposition is utilized excellently between catchy instrumentals, groovy dance beats, and darker singing that contrasts the instrumentals in an addictive manner.

Next up is Grief, which delves further into EDM influences with bending synths and celestial pads that quickly set up a deep and intricate soundscape while intentionally distorted vocals go all in on an indie and lofi type effect. Modfrey shows no fear of experimentation, blurring the lines between genres and changing dynamically between songs.

Btl brings back some rock action with hard-hitting garage punk guitar tones before unexpectedly bursting into dance beats and explosively energetic choppy synths. Blending rock and experimental EDM, Modfrey sets their music apart with a unique sound that leaves the listener wondering what to expect next.

Track 5 Old Rose starts off with dark pads and a lofi drum beat as clean guitar melodies build and echoing singing takes the forefront. Modfrey utilizes indie production and low fidelity effects on the vocals, while instrumentals take a crystal clear sound, creating another source of contrast to make layers of the music's atmosphere stand out even more so. Auto-tuned vocals soon join the fray before the track fades into silence with an ominous pad.

Misunderstood introduces itself with ascending electronic synths and rhythm guitar melodies as dance beats fill in the back of the mix. Gentle vocals add to the sound as lofi influences are taken to the forefront.

The album's title track Why Would You Care begins with harmonizing guitar leads before thumping drums and funky bass lines join the mix. Hauntingly reverbed singing creates an eerie sound as drawn-out pads hold onto lengthy notes. After bursting into action, the song soon fades out gradually with a runtime of just under 2 minutes.

Road Trip doubles down on experimental and lofi sounds as eccentric bass syths create booming low end while stabbing pads create high lead melodies. Modfrey doesn't lose their rock influences, still utilizing distorted electric guitar throughout the album, unlike many bands in similar genres.

Track 9 Last Mile continues with the vibe delivered by the previous track, even bringing in vibes of '70s/'80s retro arcade music and weirdcore influences. Last Mile could be an old movie or video game soundtrack and truly takes the listener on a musical journey to a different time.

Nyc builds with a growing synth melody while gentle guitars quietly fill in the background. Rising growling synths create a distinct sound while pitch-shifted low vocals and slowed tempos create an intense yet exciting sound. Funky bass leads add bluesy riffs to the sound, introducing yet another musical influence.

The eleventh song Dawn bursts right into growling bass synths with tones that remind of futuristic synth-wave type sound before scratching records and rapping vocals are introduced. Arpeggiated melodies and 808s add distant elements to the music before the track abruptly stops.

The final song Fin will throw the listener for a loop as explosive 808 bass tones create an aggressive sound as sharp brass hits lead into hard-hitting guitar melodies and trap beats as screeching synths add slight dissonance. The song continues to build, adding more and more instrumentals into the fray, creating controlled chaos before suddenly fading away.

Modfrey creates a powerfully unique sound that blurs the lines between indie, EDM, lofi, and experimental rock genres. With a melodic sound, expert production, and catchy hooks, Modfrey has something for fans of every sound. You can stream the debut album Why Would You Care out now!
