Exclusive Interview with Voidchaser on new prog metal track “Trust” | The Metalverse

Montreal/Stockholm based progressive metal act, Voidchaser, is back with their new single “Trust” which was released on January 10th. Featuring vocalist Jim Grey of Caligula’s Horse, the song starts with booming snare hits and phasers in the background building a futuristic and progressive sound. Abruptly dark guitar onslaughts and explosively heavy screams join the fray, building a brutally heavy sound as technical riffs show off impressive instrumentals.

In a metalcore-esque chorus, soaring singing vocals bring a new aspect to the band’s sound, drawing on emphasized melody and rising guitar leads and bouncing synths fill in the mix. Overall Voidchaser expertly balances heavy and catchy elements while blasting off with tons of progressive metal influences. After a heart-felt singing interlude the song finishes in a fierce fashion as screaming is reintroduced to fade out the track.

After the success of their debut album “Solace”, Voidchaser is back stronger than ever with their new single “Trust”. Fans of progressive metal, metalcore, and deathcore will certainly enjoy Voidchaser’s immersive sound. You can stream “Trust” out everywhere now.

We also got to talk to the band’s members Chad and Jici about the new release, touring, and upcoming festival appearances below.

Interview

1: We interviewed you last year on your release, "Tyrant"—since 2024 Voidchaser has gotten a pretty significant jump in listeners, how have things changed since last year and has the band’s mindset changed as things have grown?

Chad: We've definitely grown an audience which is incredibly cool and surreal. I think the mindset for the band has changed from "this could be a thing" to "this is a thing and we're going to take it as far as it goes."

Jici: Exactly. Chad and I actually had a conversation where we asked ourselves, "Are we going to push this project as far as it can possibly go, or what?" That's when we started taking a more intentional approach to our music. We learned the basics, and we brought in pros to guide us at different stages–from pre-production to production and marketing.

2: “Trust” is out now. The song features vocalist Jim Grey of Caligula’s Horse—what was it like working with Jim on the new track?

Jici: Oh, we're really proud of that. We were pretty bold to reach out to him and propose a feature on our song, but hey, he said yes, and the result speaks for itself.

Chad: Jim is an amazing human being. He is equal parts funny, talented, humble and kind. It was a real treat and honor to have him on the track and in all honesty, incredibly surreal to just be in a zoom call with the guy.

3: What was the experience like with your two Canadian tours in 2024? What location would you guys want to tour next?

Chad: The first two tours were a lot of fun. We learned a lot about ourselves as a band and made some great friends and great memories. We can't wait to do it again! We are open to touring anywhere to be completely honest. There is still much of Canada we haven't been to, and we would love to go to the US, South America, and Europe.

Jici: If I may add, we are currently planning our tour for 2025. So far we have confirmed dates in Quebec, as well as in the Maritime provinces-New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. We also have confirmed dates in Europe! A lot of firsts for us this year.

4: Voidchaser is set to play ProgPower Europe in 2025, is this the band's first major festival? What was it like announcing this news

Chad: This will indeed be our first major festival as well as the first festival show we have ever announced. It is very surreal to be invited to perform. Just being considered was a fantastic feeling. We are super excited to be invited to play it’s all of these fantastic musicians as well as represent the Canadian progressive metal.

Jici: Like Chad said, it’s an amazing feeling. Just last year this was nothing more than a wild dream, now its becoming our reality.

5: Voidchaser is known for its progressive death metal sound, how has the band evolved since the start and what is one of the most important lessons you've learned along the way?

Chad: I think a big part of the evolution for me was being able to rely on the band to turn ores into ingots. I feel very free as a songwriter knowing that I'm not alone anymore in the process and I can just give them something that isn't very polished and they will make it into something that is beyond my creative box. It's made me much more creative because I have a lot less mental load thinking about the end result while writing. So my most important lesson I guess is letting go of the ores, but also surrounding myself with people who want the ores in the first place.

Jici: Chad is an exceptional songwriter. I could never create songs like that or the entire narrative universe that comes with them and I admire him for that. I think we have really complementary strengths, where I can bring in the arrangements and steer the production toward a sound we've truly developed for Voidchaser. And now, with incredibly creative and talented musicians like Colin MacAndrew on drums, Jimmy Montbriand on guitar, and Mathieu Fiset joining us in the studio and on live performance for keyboards, it's helping us push that sound even further.

6: What was your most memorable tour or show moment?

Chad: There are so many that will stick with me for a while I’m sure, both good and bad. I would say that one of the happiest tour moments for me was sitting on the patio of the place we were staying at after our show in Trois-Riviere, having some celebration beers and just shooting the shit, getting to really know each other. I feel like a certain kinship between us was forged that night and I believe it still resonates within the band to this day.

Jici: You know how it is, it’s the small moments, like Chad says. For me, playing our music in front of people who are as passionate about it as we are, seeing new connections, a new community, and new memories forming around our music… it’s such a unique accomplishment… and dangerously addictive because we just want more!
